Seven stalwarts met at the pier on a sunny, if breezy, morning (Michael L, Stan, Tom, Lance, Richard L, John G & John P). It was agreed rapidly that our direction of travel should be southish, the 2 venues discussed being Langdon Cliff Café & the Ramada Inn, with divided opinions. Without voicing a definite venue some, but not all (see below), had assumed Langdon was the target & all departed on the inland route towards Dover via Telegraph Hill, Ellands Road & Coldblow, at which point John G decided that his legs were insufficiently toned after his prolonged cycling break & called it a day.

The usual pause at Sutton for the peleton to catch up did not occur, possibly because the farm we pass near that point was smelling particularly aromatic! Therein was the rub. On arrival at Langdon Cliff Café, we were 1 down – Stan did not appear. He had presumably thought that the Ramada was the destination as he had nobly suggested at the pier that against the wind the return from there would be easier than from Langdon for those with further to travel. (see Stan’s addendum).

After a very pleasant half an hour or so sitting outside in the sunshine chewing the cud & enjoying various refreshments, we wended our way back via the hill or the road to St Margaret’s & down Kingsdown Road. Apart from the usual heaps of horse manure, the route was clear with little deceleration between the bollards which have replaced the gate. I had a minor hiccup when, after passing a tractor which had been cutting the verges and hedges, I hit a piece of broken branch which somehow managed to jump into my back wheel & making a loud clacking sound. Fortunately, it was fairly rotten & did not result in any damage or sudden deceleration.

We split up to complete our journeys via Kingsdown Hill or the coast road. A modest 19 miles for me. (JP)

Addendum 1: As I was predictably pretty knackered following the climb up behind the windmill I decided to turn left towards Ringwould at the crossroads. I then came back to Upper Walmer on the footpath besides the A258 turning sharp left at the carwash garage and then re-rode the Coldblow crossing and retraced our original route back into Deal for a Miretti's. Then back home after a very modest 10 miles. (JG)

Addendum 2: Well! What happened to me? Approaching the junction to go left down the hill and into Guston, or right along Pineham Lane to Whitfield I expected to see Sparky JP or Speedy ML waiting for all to catch up. Sadly not and believing the general consensus was the Ramada, giving the Sandwich riders an easier downhill run home, rather than the 9 mile run from Kingsdown to Sandwich into a strong headwind, went there. WRONG! However it was a pleasant ride back to Deal via Eyethorne, Eastry and Sandwich. All downhill and wind assisted from Sandwich. Just under 30 miles for me. (SB)
